Vitamin C helps skin care

Vitamin C is taken internally to help the body with the immune system, to protect from radicals, to keep your gums healthy and boost energy. The average person should have 60 mg of Vitamin C (3/4 cup of orange juice) a day.
If a person smokes, it is recommended they get 100 mg per day. You can get your Vitamin C by pills or by eating oranges, grapefruits or other citrus fruits. It can also be found in tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and potatoes.
In the beauty industry women and men have been trying numerous organic and healthy vitamins, minerals and other substances to help them feel and look younger. Seeking the fountain of youth through mother nature to slow down father time.
Vials of Vitamin C can be applied topically to improve the skin's health. Repair, Renew and rejuvenate your skin. Vitamin C also produces collagen which is reasonable for holding your muscles firmly. It has been reported that applying vitamin C to the face can build more collagen, firm up the skin and keep you younger looking.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and is used to eliminate dark spots on the skin and eliminate and control acne and oily skin.

Massage therapy Week

Which massage is best for you? Swedish? Expect long, gentle, soothing strokes- for general relaxation, good for improved circulation. The therapist will use her hands and fingertips and not push too hard. How about a Deep Tissue? Therapists target muscles and tendons just under the skin and the deeper ones by using more pressure from her fingertips. Trigger Point Therapy (Myotherapy), is great for specific areas of the body that are tense-knots in your shoulder or other muscles that are tense. Therapist might use knuckles or elbow to press into the knot to release the tension. (One of my personal favorites:) Hot Stone massage - Hot stones are used on the body, the heat increases blood flow to the muscles more than other kinds of massage.
Most studies show that massage can reduce anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate. Decreasing stress increases your immune cells, lowering these is likely to cause your stress level to drop.

Avon linked to Cancer with toxic ingredients

Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition, Dr. Samuel Epstein, is warning women that toxic ingredients in Avon Products put users at risk of cancer and hormonal changes.

For this reason, Dr. Epstein is urging the National Cancer Institute to terminate plans for a joint project with Avon until the company reformulates its products to replace all toxic ingredients with safe alternatives.

A class of ingredients in Avon products, parabens, has been shown to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells in laboratory tests and parabens have been identified as possible causes of breast cancer, Dr. Epstein points out.

Used as preservatives, parabens mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.

Dr. Epstein is concerned about cancer-causing ingredients in all cosmetics and personal care products, but he is particularly concerned about Avon Products because of a newly announced collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, a U.S. government agency.

Thai Massage and Yoga

Originating in the Far East, Thai Massage is more energizing and rigorous than more classic forms of massage. Thai massage is also called Thai yoga massage, because the therapist uses his or her hands, knees, legs and feet to move the recipient's body in a series of yoga-like stretches. Muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure are also used during treatment. People describe Thai massage as both relaxing and revitalizing.

Natural Anti-aging Skin care products

Skin care dates back centuries to healing from hot stones and inhalation of fragrant herbal waters, men and women used various herbs and creams from nature for their anti-aging remedies. One of the more popular ingredients used centuries ago and is gaining in popularity again, is Shea butter, a.k.a. soap bark. It is a natural fat from the Karite tree and the nut. It has been shown to increase blood flow to the skin and provide protection from the environment, as well as moisturize the skin.
Orange oil is often used to reduce inflammation and the eyes and remove toxins from your skin, it may also increase the circulation to your skin and is very moisturizing.
These are a few ingredients that are great in cleansers, and as for moisturizers: Vitamin E and aloe are known for their antioxidant properties and ability to heal the skin. Aloe is also soothing and hydrating. Almond and avocado oils make up the base for wonderful moisturizers with anti-aging effects. Both are known for their soothing and moisturizing qualities. And royal bee jelly, which comes from bees and has pollen, vitamins, minerals and other ingredients that are known to benefit the skin.

Vaccines: Antifreeze and formaldehyde in your bloodstream?

Do you know what's in your vaccine (specifically, swine flu)? Do you want any of the following vaccine constituents in your bloodstream: Ethylene glycol (antifreeze), Phenol, also known as carbolic acid (this is used as a disinfectant, dye), Formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent, Aluminum, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease and seizures and also cancer producing in laboratory mice (additive used to cause antibody response), Thimerosal (a mercury disinfectant/preservative) can result in brain injury and autoimmune disease.. just to name a few.
These and more can be found in every shot. Vaccines are also grown and strained through animal or human tissue like monkey kidney tissue, chicken embryo, embryonic guinea pig cells, calf serum and human diploid cells (the dissected organs of aborted human fetuses as in the case of rubella, hepatitis A and chickenpox vaccines).

Drink your way to good skin care?

Skin care and other companies are jumping on a trend to offer "drinkable skin care" products. One company we're researching, Borba Skin Care offers a flavored water drink, claiming age defying qualities. So far there is no scientific or testimonial studies to back up this claim.
We can't replace all of our nutrients, vitamins and minerals with a drink, as wonderful as it sounds. Many of the products out there, whether sold in stores or through independent reps, most of the "nutrients" aren't even absorbed into the body or blood system.

Muscadine grapes and antioxidants

Studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute, the University of Florida and the Nutraceutical Research laboratories at the University of Georgia found that the Muscadine grape possesses one of the highest antioxidant levels among fruits. Antioxidants play a key role in the maintenance of healthy immune system.
Their findings also showed the Muscadine holds anti-inflammatory properties, the ability to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol while raising good (HDL) cholesterol and inhibit the growth of prostrate and breast cancer cells.
Mild consumption of red wine has been shown to decrease heart disease, the number one killer among Americans.

Lipsticks, Lead and Limits

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulates cosmetic safety under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The FD&C Act requires that cosmetics marketed in interstate commerce be safe when used as directed in the labeling or under customary conditions of use. Cosmetics are not subject to pre-market approval by FDA. However, pre-market approval is required for the color additives used in cosmetics (including those in lipsticks) and other FDA regulated products (with the exception of coal-tar hair dyes). To learn more on this subject please refer to the FDA Authority Over Cosmetics.
The FDA has not set limits for contaminants, such as lead, in cosmetics. However, FDA does set specifications for impurities, such as lead, for color additives used in cosmetics. FDA approval of color additives is based on safety evaluations that consider the color additive's intended use(s) and estimated consumer exposure resulting from those uses. FDA-approved color additives are listed in Title 21 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). To learn more about FDA approved color additives, please refer to Color Additives.
What are the FDA's limits for lead in color additives?

Chemical Peels

Stress, anxiety, pressure of daily life and pollution are visibly reflected in the condition of the skin.
Chemical peels and microderm abrasions are a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment a chemical solution is applied to the skin which causes it to "blister" and eventually peel off. The new regeneration skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin and will be temporarily more sensitive to the sun.
Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck or hands. They are used for:
* reducing fin lines under the yes and around the mouth
* treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors
* improve the appearance of mild scarring
* Treat certain types of acne
* reduce age spots, freckles and dark patches due to pregnancy or taking control pills (melasma)

Mineral Makeup, the buzz

Mineral makeup may be new to you, but it has been around for three decades. Mineral makeup was used originally by plastic surgeons and dermatologists on patients after cosmetic procedures. Mineral makeup is made from pure, crushed minerals that allows the skin to breathe and, gives you a natural look. Mineral makeup comes in powdered, pressed and liquid forms. It's ideal for most skin types, tones and women of all ages.
It's also important to read labels to ensure you are getting pure mineral makeup.
Benefits:
Mineral makeup wont clog pore or irritate the skin. Regular makeup contains artificial chemicals and preservatives. Mineral makeup is hypoallergenic, with no oil, talc, perfume, dyes, alcohol and other irritating comedogenic ingredients.
Mineral makeup can soothe skin with its' ingredients. It contains natural anti-inflammatory ingredients such as zinc and titanium oxides which help calm the skin. These ingredients also offer protection from UVA and UVB rays from the sun.
Mineral makeup is also a concealer. It's lightweight and conceals, corrects and covers pigmentations and lines. It smoothes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, conceals blotchiness and improves the appearance of skin with acne or rosacea with long lasting coverage.

Save your sole

Athlete's foot, tinea pedis, not a pleasant subject, but necessary to reveal. Athlete's foot is a very common fungal infection and if not addressed right away and correctly it can spread to the toenails. Common symptoms include: burning, itching of the feet and peeling of skin in between the toes. It can be picked up while at the gym, or in a motel shower or even at a public swimming pool.
People with diabetes and those who have other circulatory problems, are in danger of the infection getting worse, to the point of gangrene if not caught and treated.
A good homeopathic remedy can be found on our website: www.floridaspagirls.net

Electronic Cigarettes; are they safe?

You may or may not have heard or seen them yet, but they are coming to a store near you, and your kids.

If you think electronic cigarettes are safer than regular cigarettes, think again! According to CNN, manufacturers claim that electronic cigarettes – also known as e-cigarettes and e-smokes – are safer because they don’t burn tobacco. The small cylinders look like cigarettes and contain cartridges of nicotine, flavoring and other chemicals, and when you “puff” on them, a small battery heats the chemicals to produce a fine mist that can be inhaled. The result: Users feel like they’re smoking while they get their nicotine fix. Some e-cigarettes complete the illusion with a glowing red tip that emits puffs of odorless white vapor. Since there’s no toxic second-hand smoke, e-cigarettes can be used where regular cigarettes are prohibited.

Are they safe? No. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration analyzed 19 varieties of e-cigarettes and found that half of them contain nitrosamines - the same cancer-causing chemicals found in real cigarettes. A lot of them also have more nicotine than they claim and some even contain a toxic ingredient found in antifreeze! Even worse, critics say that e-cigarettes target gadget-crazy kids. The nicotine cartridges come in “fun flavors” – like chocolate, mint, cola, apple, and bubblegum, and they’re available at kid-friendly hangouts, including online and at shopping malls.

Momnificent review

I recently came across this jewel, Momnificent! Great for reading while relaxing at home or while waiting somewhere (maybe even at the spa). Momnificient is a thorough book written by Lori Radun, for women about how to achieve balance and a health in spite of our chaotic schedules, demands and responsibilities.
Momnificent offers a wealth of information from managing your finances to communicating with your children. She evens offers pearls of wisdom from her treasure trove about business and lessons she learned as an entrepreneur. "Life is a constant learning process," explains Radun, about being a student of people to managing the stress in your life. At the end of each chapter, Radun offers an assignment to her readers to take action.
We all know that "Time Management" is an oxy-moron, but if we pay attention to our activities and what are our "time stealers", we can better manage our activities and prioritize our work and other projects. Radun has a chapter dedicated to time and how we can be more productive.
From personal development to home and family to relationships and careers, Radun takes the gloves off to help you in any or all areas of your life. Release stored emotions, before the storm hits, advises Radun.
Radun also offers practical advise about how to teach children about money and allowances. Developing a plan is key in all areas of life. She also talks about planned recreation time for each person individually as well as family recreation. This book can probably be read in any order, however, I do recommend reading the introduction and chapter 1, first and doing the exercises.
This is even great for a book club or workshop, to read a chapter a day or more, and get together to discuss what they found out about themselves, or how this may be helping them and their family.
Order you copy today, The Momnificent Life by Lori Radun, coach, speaker and author.

Attention Sun Worshippers, Sunning is toxic

Just because there are modalities which can help minimize or diminish sun spots, aging and other imperfections, doesn't mean you should still go out and spend hours in the sun or in a tanning bed. Tanning beds are ten times worse when it comes to UV rays and "irrepairable" damage.
We get about 25 percent of our sun exposure by the time we're 18.
Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR), which comprise both UVA and UVB rays from the sun, produces DNA damage that may lead to mutations in genes involved in the pathogenesis of skin cancer. Sunscreens that absorb or block UVR serve an important protective function. UVB is the main culprit in skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging and other effects of photoaging. UVA is not blocked by most windows. More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure.
Is it possible to reverse sun damage?
Yes and no. According to dermatologists and plastic surgeons, most are saying yes, but really they are just minimizing the damage of lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and lightening the hyperpigmentation. Light chemical peels, intense pulsed light (photofacial), ALA-PDT (aminolevulanic acid photodynamic therapy) v-beam laser, microdermabrasion are some of the non-ablative procedures that can help. Ablative resurfacing treatment, medium to deep chemical peels, fractionated laser such as the Fraxel repair, Active FX and Pearl laser. Other modalities include; photorejuvenation (IPL) and numerous topical products including RetinA and alpha hydroxy products to help you restore some but not all of the damage you have sustained. Always consult with a licensed dermatologist or plastic surgeon regarding your options and the potential side effects.

Pure Honey Benefits

Starting on July 14, 2009, honey produced, sold or processed in Florida must be all natural. Florida has become the first state in the nation to prohibit additives, chemicals or adulterants from being added to sweetener.

According to Florida's Agriculture Commissioner, Charles H. Bronson, " We want to assure consumers that the product they are buying is pure. Too often in the pas, honey has been cut with water or sugar and sometimes even contaminated with insecticides or antibiotics. In the future, when you're paying for honey in Florida, pure honey is what you will get."

All natural honey has been a beauty product since the days of Cleopatra and is still used today in both hair and skin care products. Honey is a natural humectant, which means it has the ability to maintain softness, suppleness and elasticity. As skin ages, or as it is exposed to environmental stresses and chemical agents, it loses its' ability to retain water, it becomes dry and appears wrinkled. Honey's natural hydrating properties make it idea for use in moisturizing products and is suitable for sensitive skin products.

Studies have also revealed that honey has significant natural antioxidant properties too. Antioxidants play a role in protecting the skin from the damage of UV rays and aiding the skin in rejuvenation. Prolonged exposure to the sun's UV radiation can cause skin damage, premature aging and even skin cancer.

Additionally, honey's antimicrobial properties, inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, make it useful for treatment of minor acne flare ups. Honey won't dry the skin like other acne related products will. Honey's prospects in skin care are looking better at its' use to create alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). AHAs are an important ingredient in many skin creams and moisturizers because they help exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating increases the renewal of skin cells and gives a younger more vibrant look.

Many spas use honey in their treatments; such as body wraps and facials. A few include: milk + honey spa in Austin, Texas, and the Ponte Vedra Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra, Fl, and also at Uhma Spa in Miami Beach (uses raw honey in deep cleaning facial and avocado and honey masque for the body).

Thai Massage and its Benefits

There is an array of massages for any ailment, pain, therapeutic need or just relaxation you desire. For westerners, those of us here in the United States, we are just now learning about "new" massages through spas or from our massage therapists. One of these healing modalities being Thai Massage, which is actually 2,500 years old. Thai was developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand and uses passive stretching and gentle pressure along the body's energy lines to increase flexibility, relieve muscles and joint tension and balance the body's energy systems.
I experienced a wonderful Herbal Thai Compression Massage today at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. After a warm welcome, slipping on spa shoes and drinking some ginger-peach tea, I relaxed in the ladies lounge.
My massage therapist, Francesca, who is from Montecarlo, escorted me to my spa suite and then inquired about my overall health and what my expectations were from my massage. Was I looking for something relaxing or to stretch my overworked muscles and re-energize me?
My spa suite was beautiful, with a jacuzzi, private shower and gorgeous relaxing view over the intercoastal. After smoothing on my special blend of body essential oils, my therapist therapeutically began soothing my tired and tense muscles. Interspersed with deep, herbal compression rubs, I was beginning to feel relaxed and rejuvenated.
The Mandarin Oriental has the only five-star spa in the country.

Spa Month in Miami

Pamper yourself, heal thy skin.
Hurry on down to Miami and South Beach. July is spa month and there are sizzling hot deals on signature massages, aromatherapy facials, ultimate manicures and pedicures.
Any one of these spas are worth the drive down to Miami or South Beach. From early settlers like Ponce de leon and his Fountain of Youth, to baby boomers of today, people from all parts of the globe are seeking peace, tranquility and the elusive youthful appearance and feeling. Day spas and resort spas were a niche in the nineties, now they are clamoring to pamper you. Men, women, teens and athletes have customized therapies with relaxing, re-hydrating and rejuvenating services.
Dozens of spas like these; The Spa at Madarin Oriental in Miami, ESPA at Acqualina and The Boutique Spa at the Ritz Carlton, offer pampering services for the busy executive, dedicated athlete and the domestic engineers ranging from hydrating and anti-aging facials at Spa V, or a signature Carita Hands and Feet treatment at the Ritz Carlton in South Beach, or a Thai Herbal Compress Ritual at the Mandarin Oriental. The Mandarin Oriental Spa is offering several great summer specials for only $99, including; an Aromatherapy Facial, an All Seasons exfoliation or an ultimate manicure and pedicure. Many spas and salons are offering summer savings. All you have to do is look around you, or visit the Miami Spa Month website.
The word "spa" is an acronym for the Latin phrase, sanus per aquam, which means health through water. You will notice many spas use water fountains, falls and treatments to help you relax and rejuvenate.
Unwind in the hydro relaxation room, while sipping enzyme tea or sparkling water, or sweat it out in the eucolyptus scented sauna. Cleanse your skin with sea salt scrubs, wrap yourself in milk and honey re-hydration cocoon, with the quiet beach as your backdrop. Melt away stress and rejuvenate your senses under cascading waterfalls, or languish at the Aquanox Spa at the Trump International Beach Resort, on the sun-drenched, sparkling shores of the Atlantic ocean.
One of the benefits of going to a luxury spa (resort or hotel spa), are the other benefits; using the spa's facility for the day. By doing  a little research, one can order ahead and have lunch before or after their services and also take advantage of the sauna, steam room, or one of the other amenities they offer. Oftentimes, you can add on services for less than doing a solo treatment. Indulge a little more, you'll come away refreshed, more focused and ready to tackle the myriad of projects awaiting you at home or at work.
Do you have a birthday coming up? Or maybe a friend, family member or colleague does. Or perhaps a wedding, anniversary, mother-to-be, or just for a girls (or guys) day out. Many spas will cater to your event including customized services and healthy delectable cuisine.
Visit them today. And us at: www.FloridaSpaGirls.com

Allergic to Sunscreen?

You're probably aware that too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, premature aging  and skin growth. Applying sunscreen protects your skin form the sun, reducing your risk of developing skin cancer and helping prevent premature aging. But what if you're allergic to sunscreen?

Fur, Feathers & More

Spas for you pooch? Paws need a pedi or is it a mani? Little Belle or Buster need their fur groomed too. Shorten and file those nails, check their ears and keep them shiny and buff at Faux Paws Pet Spa & Salon. Plenty of dog grooming facilities offer pampering for you beloved pet this summer. Keep your pet hydrated, be sure they get a check up, watch out for fleas.
We've found that grinding our dogs nails down is better. Sounds rough,  but it's safer and better according to the vet. (We'll explore this one some more.)
My dog still enjoys going on long walks, we try to do this at night, if it cools off any. Great exercise for both of us. Be sure to look around or ask other pet owners where a dog park is too, if you don't know. Dogs love to socialize too. They can run until their hearts content. Then maybe your dog won't give you the "I'm bored" look too. My dog loves to play catch whether it's in the house or in the yard. Throw a bone, ball or other toy and she's off like a shot.
Also, beware of shampoos and what you might use at home to give your dog a bath. Some of these can be very harsh on your dog's skin, not to mention may cause more problems with their health if they are allergic, or other issues. Check with your vet to be sure.

Saunas, Myths, Detox

Saunas have been around for many years, centuries even. But are they safe? We are looking into this for you health.
Detoxing

Sweating in high temperatures opens up your pores and helps the body rid of toxins like lead, copper, nickel, mercury and other chemicals that are harmful to the body. Saunas cleanse the skin and give it a radiant look and healthy feel.

For a healthy person, moderate use of a sauna presents no health risks. However, people with conditions such as high blood pressure, heart diseases, asthma and some skin conditions, also pregnancy, should always consult with their physician before and after using a sauna.

17th Century Spa, A Recipe for Wellness

Love going to the spa even more. Pamper your overworked, stressed, undernourished and dehydrated body, mind and soul. Heal thy skin, inside and out. Healing therapies await you from five centuries of wellness practices. Cleanse and nurture with  genuine, historical approach with botanicals from the 17th century. The professionals at The Spa at Colonial Williamsburg want our to experience and delight in one of the century treatments, moving forward in your wellness.
I felt blessed, thankful, rejuvenated and even a little guilty (since my family was in the park), after splurging in a 17th century Shea Butter treatment.
As you undress both, literally and figuratively, leaving your worries and stress with your street clothes in your locker, wrap yourself in a new layer, a soft, welcoming bathrobe and embark into a journey of wellness continuum. Spend a few minutes relaxing in the ladies lounge with a century tea, for balancing, detoxifying or another healing quality.
Inhale fragrant herbal tea before and during your treatment, be it a massage, body wrap or facial. Allow your aesthetician or massage therapist to help you relax, unwind and focus only on you.
My 17th century treatment included a Shea Butter, derived from a nut in Africa. Shea Butter is known for its' hydrating qualities. Shea butter is a raw material, vegetable fat, among its' benefits includes a sun protector, a natural anti-inflammatory and counters some irritation.

Coffee Body Scrub

Some people love chocolate, some people love their coffee. Why not invigorate the body, and bloodstream, with an infusion of caffeine. (Interesting fragrance).
What you need to make your own coffee body scrub (compliments of Spa Index).
2 cups of coarsely ground coffee, 1/2 cup raw sugar or sea salt and 2-3 tablespoons massage oil (almond oil, jojoba oil). Mix all ingredients together. Take a hot shower to moisten your skin and open your pores. Using wide, circular motions, rub the coffee exfoliant onto your skin with strong, even pressure. shower off, pat skin dry and apply a thin layer of your favorite body lotion.
The grounds help exfoilate dead skin cells and is rumored to help minimize cellulite and varicose veins. coffee grounds are usually too coarse to use on the face, but okay for the rest of the body.
There are many variations for this scrub, depending on your aromatique preferences, such as vanilla or nuts.

Homemade Insect Repellent

Do you prefer natural remedies? Are you needing an insect repellent and can't get to a store? You may have these items around the house.

You will need: 2 cups of witch hazel, 1 1/2 teaspoons of citronella oil and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
Combine the above ingredients into a 16 ounce spray bottle. Shake vigorously before using. Requires no refrigeration, then apply liberally.

(recipe compliments of Spa Index)

Healthy Glowing Skin

Sulfur residue foods have been known to give skin a healthy, vibrant glow. Sulfur is referred to as the "beauty mineral", which gives skin its' smoothness and shine. Sulfur aids in the digestion of fats, controls the metabolism of carbohydrates and rids the body of waste that may clog pores, thus causing a lackluster complexion.
Sulfur is found in aloe vera, arugula, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower) mustard, radishes, ripe bell peppers, ripe hot peppers, spirulina, hempseeds, onions, garlic and watercress.

Can we really stop aging?

There are many products on the shelves today that boast they can stop, diminish or reduce the aging process. From moisturizers to chemical peels, there's something for every skin type and disorder.
Much of what your see, the surface skin such as dryness and lines comes as a result of exposure to the sun, photodamage. I guess most people feel invincible when they are younger and therefore don't heed good advise about slathering on sunscreen everyday, not just when you're going to the beach or pool.
Unfortunately for fair skinned people, the lighter your complexion the worse the damage is likely to be.
From age spots and spidery veins to your body shape, aging doesn't make life easy for anyone. And most of this is just aesthetic, or superficial, cosmetic appearance. What goes on inside the body, as it ages, i.e., how you treat it over the years, is another topic.
Women's skin comes from the hormone estrogen. As women get older their estrogen levels fall and studies have shown that the loss of estrogen can cause dryness, shrinking and fine wrinkles.
Smoking is another culprit for poor skin. Not only does it cause fine lines and wrinkles it robs the skin of nutrients such as elastin.

Green Spa Treatments

With everyone becoming more aware of, learning about and implementing ways to be "green", lessening our carbon footprint on our only planet, has not escaped notice of spas as well. Not only are the services green, they are partaking in recycling and sustaining to becoming LEED certified.
A massage is an earth-friendly treatment. As long as the oils are eco-friendly, such as an aromatherapy massage with certified organic essential oils is one of the green treatments. Using pure oils is more eco-friendly than creams or lotions.
Most people will take the time to research spas before attending to feel more comfortable with the environment and the staff. Obviously reviewing websites of spas and salons as well as reading "customer reviews" is a great benefit. Look for spas and salons that offer organic, or eco-friendly services and products. Sixty percent of what is applied to the skin is absorbed into your bloodstream.
A body masque and facial is also a great treatment provided they utilize organic products. Scrubs are also a wonderful earth friendly service to partake, exfoliate and rejuvenate.

Top 10 best skin-cities

We have the worst, now we need to have the best list. The best cities for good skin, according to TotalBeauty.
Cheyenne, Wyoming is number 10 on the list as one of the least polluted cities in the US. Pollutants create free radicals that damage skin. Cheyenne also has moderate humidity, too little can dry skin and make wrinkles more obvious, too much humidity can cause sweating which can lead to breakouts).
No. 9, San Francisco, CA - residents are likely to have little sun damage. Plus, they have a very low amount of tanning beds! In addition to fewer sunny days, relative humidity, they also have one of the lowest rates of smokers in the country. Washington, D.C., is number 8 on the good skin city list. Attributed to their low rate of skin cancer, according to the CDC and the sun only shines about 50 percent of the year. They also have a low amount of tanning beds, only 2.1 for every 100,000 people. Also, they get their anti-oxidants as they drink more wine per capita. Number 7 is San Antonio, Texas - one of the lowest instances of skin cancer and lack of tanning facilities, 3.4 per 100,000 people.
New York, NY is number 6, on the good list. They are lacking tanning salons and only 58 percent of the days (per year)  are sunny. they also have average levels of humidity and low instances of skin cancer. Billings, MT is number 5, Big Sky country doesn't just refer tot he lack of tall buildings. Billings has some of the cleanest air in the country. There are a lot of tanning salons around, but they also have moderate humidity and average amount of sunshine.
Flagstaff, Arizona is number 4, although the sunshine will rival Florida. They have one of the lowest rates of skin cancer and also low levels of pollution.
A favorite destination comes in at number 3, Honolulu, Hawaii. A lot of sunshine, however the air is pollution-free and very few tanning salons. The humidity is moderate and there is little weather change, so your skin can acclimate. Number 2 is Bismarck, ND. Bismarck has a great recipe for healthy skin; clean air, moderate sunshine and humidity and it has very low rates of skin cancer. And number, the best city for your skin is..... Anchorage, Alaska! Seriously. it's not polluted, has the least amount of sunny days (41 percent) and low rates of skin cancers. Your skin should look stunning.

Worst cities to live in for our skin

Are you having troubled skin? TotalBeauty looked at pollution levels, sunshine, humidity averages, skin cancer, smoking rates and even tanning salons per capita to determine which US cities could be disastrous for your skin.
Portland, Maine, came in #13 thanks to skin cancer and  smoking rates, and there are 25 tanning salons for every 100,000 people. Tanning beds have been known to aggressively speed up your skin's aging process. Number 12 is Tacoma, Washington. According to TotalBeauty, you may want to avoid Tacoma, like the plague, because along with 21 tanning salons per capita and a high incidence of skin cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control, it's the most stressed out cit in our country. Stress raises your level of cortisol, which can affect oil glands and acne.
Macon, GA, is number 11 on the list. "Macon ma be the Heart of Georgia," but it's residents might want to run to the borders for the sake of their pores." macon is one of the most humid cities in the country. Your skin needs some humidity to prevent it from dehydrating, but too much can trigger breakouts. When you sweat, it mixes with oil and dirt which can clog pores and cause breakouts.
Number 10 is Tampa, FL, with our above-average sunshine, tropical humidity levels and a smoking rate of 23.4 percent (the national average is about 20 percent). No excuse for UV worshipping. Say it ain't so, Kansas City, Missouri is number 9 on the skin care worst city list. Missouri has one of the highest levels of skin cancer in the country, more than one quarter of the residents smoke. Heavy pollution an 81 percent average humidity aren't helping complexions either. Smoking is the quickest way to age the skin. It prevent oxygen from reaching the skin, restricts blood vessels and triggers mmp1, the enzyme that destroys collagen. Collagen loss means looser skin tone and sagging skin.

Sunscreen what works, what doesn't

Sun worshippers I hear you, but heed me, you will thank me later. I know how we all look awesome with a tan, but here are a few quick points to consider before going out.
1. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to the top of your head, whether you have a lot of hair or not. The scalp is often forgotten. If you look at older people you will see where they often get skin cancer; their nose, around the hairline, on the scalp and around the ears. There are spray sunscreens you can spray on and don't forget the part and the back of your neck! For those who may have less hair, apply sunscreen more liberally and often!
2. After you've been in the sun a while, been in the water or been sweating while out in the sun, it is also imperative to re-apply sunscreen, as we deplete water and other minerals, etc. the sunscreen will come off. So re-apply after swimming, playing in the sun or after about 90 minutes. Most sunscreens will not still be working after 90 minutes and often times re-applying may not be helpful.
3. It is also imperative to use a sunscreen that says, "broad-spectrum protection", on the label. Don't be fooled by more expensive brands. Usually the inexpensive sunscreens will contain the ingredients to both both UVA an UVB rays. UVA rays in addition to burning the skin, penetrating deeper, and causing genetic damage in cells they also suppress the immune system.
4. Even if you're not outside, you should apply sunscreen as the UVA rays can also pass through glass and cause skin cancer. So for those of you who work in offices, especially around computers, or even if you're working around the house (inside), running errands, you are still exposed.
5. Choose products with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or Parsol 1789 (avobenzone) - the best ingredients for UVA protection.

Acne skin treatments

If you, or someone you know has mild to moderate acne here are a few suggestions for home-remedies, to help control this annoying skin condition.
You are what you eat. You've probably heard this before and it's still true. Both inside and out. You can also use fruits and vegetables, and some herbs as the core products for skin treatment.
A natural sweetener, honey also disinfects, and promotes tissue regeneration for skin lesions. If you use a honey-based masque twice per week, this will aid in keeping acne under control.
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables reduces the toxin level in the body as well as being more consistent cleaning of the skin. Citrus juice are used in peels for the skin, also great for oily/combination skin. A smoother treatment, Almond oil helps minimize scarring on the skin and tea tree oil is also a natural disinfectant. A more common known plant, Aloe vera, also tomatoes and cucumbers are also beneficial for the skin, from the outside.
Remember to drink plenty of water or clear juices to stay hydrated as well as cleanse the body of toxins.
One more treatment, this one for red or inflamed skin, use hot and cold compresses. The cold compress reduces swelling and the hot dilates the pores to allow for elimination of clogging residues.

From the kitchen to the laundry and closet

With the ever growing green ideas and needs for our health and our planet, and to keep toxins down in our home, as well as safeguard our families, here are a few new (old) solutions for baking soda. (from Publix Greenwise)
Baking soda is more than a riser for cakes and baked goods, here are a few household uses:
1. Pour it down the drain to eliminate odors.
2. Sprinkle it to extinguish a kitchen fire.
3. Add 1/2 cup to the rinse cycle for fresher laundry.
4. Use it on a clean, wet sponge to scrub and freshen your kitchen microwave.
5. Try it to make stainless steel pots shine.
6. Sprinkle in sports shoes and gym bags to deodorize them.
7. Freshen your dog by rubbing baking soda into his fur, then brushing it out.
8. Get rid of tea stains in mugs with a mixture of 1/4 cup baking soda and a quart of warm water.
9. Eliminate food odors in the dishwasher by sprinkling baking soda in the bottom, then runnig the dishwasher as usual.
10. Use it as a facial scrub--just moisten to make a paste.

Myths about Skin Cancer, Tanning

People actually get less than 25 percent of their total sun exposure under the age of 18. Each 20 year period after that averages another 25 percent. Therefore, it is imperative that you use sunscreen all the time, beginning as soon as possible. Even if you are just driving to and from work, or sitting in front of a computer, slather on sunscreen. Ladies, the SPF in your foundation or moisturizer is probably not enough either.
More than a million people, 71 percent of women under 30, go to tanning salons which is more deadly than the sun itself. The high-pressure bulbs in tanning beds emit as much as 12 times the UVA the sun does, increasing your chance of melanoma by as much as 75 percent! So, the only safe tan is the one that comes in a bottle.
Wear sunscreen everyday, especially if you are going to the beach and reapply after 80 minutes, or after swimming.
What is a good sunscreen?
Read the labels, look for "broad spectrum", zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, these will shield you from UVA and UVB rays. Use at least an SPF of 30, for fair skinned people, try to use a higher SPF.
Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your neck, chest, back of neck, ears, top of your head and tops of your feet!

Eyes, the eyes have it

Everyone is at risk for eye damage from the sun, year round. The greatest risk is between the hours of 10 a.m and four p.m. Those with the highest risk, are the ones outside the most; truck drivers, fishermen, farmers, beach-goers, skiers and the like.
Ultra violet (UV) radiation in sunlight is commonly divided into UVA and UVB and your sunglasses should block both forms.
People who spend long hours outdoors without adequate eye protection can develop photokeratitis, reversible sunburn of the cornea. This is painful condition can result in temporary loss of vision. When sunlight reflects off of snow, sand and water, it further increases exposure to ultraviolet radiation. These invisible high-energy rays lie just beyond the violet end of the visible light spectrum. The same harmful rays that damage the skin, can also increase your risk of developing eye problems such as cataracts- a clouding of the eye's lens that develops over years.

Healing Music

Music touches the soul in any language. Music can be a powerful catalyst for healing since it touches the very core of our soul. Listening to (healing) music; lowers our blood pressure, boosts the immune system, relieves depression, improves concentration, enhances creativity, manages pain and lowers stress hormones.
A fine wineglass sings when resonated with its fundamental frequency. Jeffrey Thompson, D.C., discovered people also resonate when exposed to their fundamental frequency. Incorporating his special knowledge of binaural beats formed by programmed phasing of sound between the channels in headphones, he synchronizes both hemispheres of the brain as visualized on various scientific medical monitors. The brain synchronizes with the beat and then  he beat is slowly changed to the frequency of the state of mind desired, such as alpha for relaxation or delta for deep sleep.
Dr. Thompson has incorporated various isolated frequencies that elicit the desired responses into musical notes and then composes nonlinear music using complex algorithms of musical notes combined with up tot 50 channels of various sound elements.
The type of audio stimulation one selects should be based on the desired entertainment of brain waves and the state of consciousness associated with that frequency. For example, for insomnia; music designed to increase delta brain waves might be best for those seeking a sleep aid or state of deep relaxation.
Even in times of war, soldiers and personnel have been saved by music, http://www.beliefnet.com/Health/2008/10/Healing-Lessons-from-a-War-Zone.aspx?p=2

Natural Remedies

As consumers we are always looking for something to help alleviate an ache, pain, skin irritation or other problem. More people are looking towards homeopathic remedies as these are effective, but they have fewer side effects and, are less expensive.
For superficial burns, cuts and scrapes, trim part of an aloe plant and squeeze some of the sticky juice onto the affected area two to three times per day to soothe and aid in healing.
For deeper cuts and scrapes, add a few drops of water extracted calendula tincture to a bandage and apply to the cut or scrape. Change the bandage to to three times per day.
For sprains, bruises and minor aches and pains, apply traumeel ointment, botanical and mineral substances with anti-inflammatory and other healing properties, to painful areas and rub in as often as needed.

Detox, for your health

Detox is synonymous with celebrities for addictions (usually alcohol or drugs). However, detox is known in the health and beauty, or spa industry, for ridding the body of toxins. Popular detox diets not only offer to flush poisons from the body, but also eliminate excess weight, can clear you complexion and aid the immune system.
Detoxifying, or purifying the body of harmful substances is a not new, it has actually been around for centuries. Detox, short for detoxification, is ridding the body of toxins such as drugs, alcohol and pollutants from our environment.
A few reasons to be concerned about detoxing, which can be serious; vitamin deficiencies, muscle breakdown and blood sugar problems. Depriving the body of vitamins and minerals can weaken the body's ability to fight infections and inflammation. Diets can upset the blood sugar, potassium and sodium levels in the body, people with diabetes, heart or kidney disease or women who are pregnant or nursing shouldn't try detox.
The safe, natural detox is by drinking water. Water is natural, offers dehydration as well as minerals and will flush the system along with your built-in detox; the liver, kidneys, lungs and skin.
A few other side-effects to watch out for when detoxing include; headaches, fatigue, irritability, aches and pains and frequent urination and then dehydration.
Always consult with your doctor and a nutritionist prior to starting any diets or detoxes.

Age-Defying Steps

Men and women are both vying to keep their health and youthful appearance. A few tips to stay younger: Weight Training for Bone Density is one very helpful tip. Bone-density loss can begin as early as in your 20's, when calcium ad phosphate, which help form bones in childhood, can start to be reabsorbed by the body. In addition to calcium and vitamin D, there are bone-building medications which can aid the body as one gets older, the reabsorption process speeds up. Fun, easy exercises like, walking, yoga or using free weights has been shown to slow the rate of bone-mineral loss. Dr. Jennifer Bourst, Chiropractor, advises her patients to start slow, "It may seem overwhelming to start a new regimen and vigorous, so start at maybe 10 minutes per day and slowly increase the minutes. Before you know it, you'll be walking for 30-40 and 60 minutes several times per week, if not daily. And you will feel numerous benefits; more energy, clear-minded and relaxed, as well as building bone-density and keeping your weight under control."

Caffeine Protect from Skin Cancer

Lead researcher Dr. Paul Nghiem, an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Washington in Seattle, states,"We've found what we believe o be the mechanism by which caffeine is associated with decreased skin cancer."
During the study, Nghiem's team looked at caffeine's effect on human skin cells in a laboratory that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation. They found that in cells damaged by UV rays, caffeine interrupted a protein called ATR-Chk1, causing the damaged cells to self-destruct.
According to Ngheim, caffeine has no effect on undamaged cells.
ATR is essential to damaged cells that are growing rapidly and caffeine specifically targets damaged cells that can become cancerous. Caffeine more than doubles the number of damaged cells that will die normally after a given dose of UV, added Nghiem. this is a biological mechanism that explains what we have been seeing for many years from the oral intake of caffeine.
On a topical study, Nghiem has been experimenting by applying caffeine directly on the skin (of mice and humans. According to Nghiem, "It suppresses skin cancer development by as much as 72 percent in mice." (more on website, FloridaSpaGirls.net)

Acupuncture, for more than Pain

Acupuncture is based on the theory of energy called chi or qi, flowing through your body, an ancient chinese therapy used for centuries. Licensed Acupuncturists, like Janine, at Unity Family Wellness Center in Winter Garden, Florida, believe Chi is thought to flow along energy pathways called meridians.
People use acupuncture to relieve pain and treat certain health conditions. You can use it by itself, or as part of a treatment program. Studies have found good results for the use of acupuncture in treating; nausea and vomiting related to pregnancy, chemotherapy and post surgery pain. Additionally acupuncture may be used for: stroke rehabilitation, headaches, migraines, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, Osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and others you can read about at www.FloridaSpaGirls.net
Recently I have been receiving acupuncture treatments for about a month.  I am amazed at the reduction of back pain and tension I have been living with for months now due to an auto accident, from the acupuncture and another modality called cupping. Janine uses these suction cups on my back where she applies some tension from the cups and strategically reapplies them over various points on my backside. You may notice some red circles on your back for a little while, however these cups have instantly shown to me how they have helped reduce the tension in numerous muscles from my neck to my thighs. After this I can more readily accept the acupuncture treatment. From these treatments my back has felt some relief of pain both constant and sharp.
Most people resort to acupuncture as a last resort when they should be looking at it before taking over-the-counter and prescription drugs which cause more harm to the body which has been known to heal itself. Visit us here: www.FloridaSpaGirls.net
