Fur, Feathers & More

Spas for you pooch? Paws need a pedi or is it a mani? Little Belle or Buster need their fur groomed too. Shorten and file those nails, check their ears and keep them shiny and buff at Faux Paws Pet Spa & Salon. Plenty of dog grooming facilities offer pampering for you beloved pet this summer. Keep your pet hydrated, be sure they get a check up, watch out for fleas.
We've found that grinding our dogs nails down is better. Sounds rough,  but it's safer and better according to the vet. (We'll explore this one some more.)
My dog still enjoys going on long walks, we try to do this at night, if it cools off any. Great exercise for both of us. Be sure to look around or ask other pet owners where a dog park is too, if you don't know. Dogs love to socialize too. They can run until their hearts content. Then maybe your dog won't give you the "I'm bored" look too. My dog loves to play catch whether it's in the house or in the yard. Throw a bone, ball or other toy and she's off like a shot.
Also, beware of shampoos and what you might use at home to give your dog a bath. Some of these can be very harsh on your dog's skin, not to mention may cause more problems with their health if they are allergic, or other issues. Check with your vet to be sure.

Saunas, Myths, Detox

Saunas have been around for many years, centuries even. But are they safe? We are looking into this for you health.
Detoxing

Sweating in high temperatures opens up your pores and helps the body rid of toxins like lead, copper, nickel, mercury and other chemicals that are harmful to the body. Saunas cleanse the skin and give it a radiant look and healthy feel.

For a healthy person, moderate use of a sauna presents no health risks. However, people with conditions such as high blood pressure, heart diseases, asthma and some skin conditions, also pregnancy, should always consult with their physician before and after using a sauna.

17th Century Spa, A Recipe for Wellness

Love going to the spa even more. Pamper your overworked, stressed, undernourished and dehydrated body, mind and soul. Heal thy skin, inside and out. Healing therapies await you from five centuries of wellness practices. Cleanse and nurture with  genuine, historical approach with botanicals from the 17th century. The professionals at The Spa at Colonial Williamsburg want our to experience and delight in one of the century treatments, moving forward in your wellness.
I felt blessed, thankful, rejuvenated and even a little guilty (since my family was in the park), after splurging in a 17th century Shea Butter treatment.
As you undress both, literally and figuratively, leaving your worries and stress with your street clothes in your locker, wrap yourself in a new layer, a soft, welcoming bathrobe and embark into a journey of wellness continuum. Spend a few minutes relaxing in the ladies lounge with a century tea, for balancing, detoxifying or another healing quality.
Inhale fragrant herbal tea before and during your treatment, be it a massage, body wrap or facial. Allow your aesthetician or massage therapist to help you relax, unwind and focus only on you.
My 17th century treatment included a Shea Butter, derived from a nut in Africa. Shea Butter is known for its' hydrating qualities. Shea butter is a raw material, vegetable fat, among its' benefits includes a sun protector, a natural anti-inflammatory and counters some irritation.

Coffee Body Scrub

Some people love chocolate, some people love their coffee. Why not invigorate the body, and bloodstream, with an infusion of caffeine. (Interesting fragrance).
What you need to make your own coffee body scrub (compliments of Spa Index).
2 cups of coarsely ground coffee, 1/2 cup raw sugar or sea salt and 2-3 tablespoons massage oil (almond oil, jojoba oil). Mix all ingredients together. Take a hot shower to moisten your skin and open your pores. Using wide, circular motions, rub the coffee exfoliant onto your skin with strong, even pressure. shower off, pat skin dry and apply a thin layer of your favorite body lotion.
The grounds help exfoilate dead skin cells and is rumored to help minimize cellulite and varicose veins. coffee grounds are usually too coarse to use on the face, but okay for the rest of the body.
There are many variations for this scrub, depending on your aromatique preferences, such as vanilla or nuts.

Homemade Insect Repellent

Do you prefer natural remedies? Are you needing an insect repellent and can't get to a store? You may have these items around the house.

You will need: 2 cups of witch hazel, 1 1/2 teaspoons of citronella oil and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
Combine the above ingredients into a 16 ounce spray bottle. Shake vigorously before using. Requires no refrigeration, then apply liberally.

Healthy Glowing Skin

Sulfur residue foods have been known to give skin a healthy, vibrant glow. Sulfur is referred to as the "beauty mineral", which gives skin its' smoothness and shine. Sulfur aids in the digestion of fats, controls the metabolism of carbohydrates and rids the body of waste that may clog pores, thus causing a lackluster complexion.
Sulfur is found in aloe vera, arugula, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower) mustard, radishes, ripe bell peppers, ripe hot peppers, spirulina, hempseeds, onions, garlic and watercress.
Signs of sulfur deficiency include: acne, arthritis, brittle hair and nails, gastro-intestinal challenges, immune dysfunction, wrinkling, rashes, scar tissue and pale, pasty complexion.

Can we really stop aging?

There are many products on the shelves today that boast they can stop, diminish or reduce the aging process. From moisturizers to chemical peels, there's something for every skin type and disorder.
Much of what your see, the surface skin such as dryness and lines comes as a result of exposure to the sun, photodamage. I guess most people feel invincible when they are younger and therefore don't heed good advise about slathering on sunscreen everyday, not just when you're going to the beach or pool.
Unfortunately for fair skinned people, the lighter your complexion the worse the damage is likely to be.
From age spots and spidery veins to your body shape, aging doesn't make life easy for anyone. And most of this is just aesthetic, or superficial, cosmetic appearance. What goes on inside the body, as it ages, i.e., how you treat it over the years, is another topic.
Women's skin comes from the hormone estrogen. As women get older their estrogen levels fall and studies have shown that the loss of estrogen can cause dryness, shrinking and fine wrinkles.
Smoking is another culprit for poor skin. Not only does it cause fine lines and wrinkles it robs the skin of nutrients such as elastin.
